When the Far Right Makes the News: Protest Characteristics and Media Coverage of Far-Right Mobilization in Europe

When do the media cover far-right protests? News coverage matters for entrenchment of far right in contemporary democracies, but little comparative research has looked at what drives news attention to mobilization. We apply a classic input–output process model selection bias test hypothesis that visibility protests events depends on characteristics protest initiators, type action, and reactions. appraise this via logistic regressions an original dataset 5972 retrieved from online press releases by groups (input) national quality newspapers (output) 11 European countries (2008–2018). The analysis confirms are particularly responsive contentious around migration issues, action–reaction chains between political opponents. Our findings shed light role organizations success pathways which these movements shape public agendas.
